CATNAP – A MUSIC APP FOR YOUR PETS

My idea came to me when I left the radio on downstairs and my cat, who usually wants to go out and play, stayed indoors and slept with the radio on. Then it came to me, pets want to have music in their life too. And music does help them with their moods and brain waves.

I have decided make a music app for your pets which is called CATNAP, it will be categorised into different moods, or it can be customised by you for your own specific pet. You can get the app on iOS or Android for only £2.99 comparing to other alternative which are more expensive.

I then read a few researches about music therapy for pets. Here are some examples:

Dogtime: http://dogtime.com/dog-health/general/21223-music-therapy-for-dogs-and-cats

About.com: http://cats.about.com/od/amyshojai/a/music-therapy-for-cats.htm

According to Snowdon in his recent article “Cat prefer species-appropriate music” (2015), “in order for music to be effective with other species, it must be in the frequency range and with similar tempos to those used in natural communication by each species”.

That is to say, in order to make music for animals, we first must understand the animals themselves. And who would not be more understanding the animals other than their owners.

Of course, the idea of giving your pets a good time with music isn’t new. It is important to take care of their physical health as well as mental health. And music has its important role in making their health better. However, there are different views in music therapy for animals.

There are a few products and playlists out there which are available for your pets. For example:

Music for Cats: Which is originally composed by David Teie. They have done their research for 6 years and get funded by Kickstarter before getting the product out. I personally want to develop  my idea according to this website. It is inspiring and the music is wonderful, however, the limitation is that it is only for cats, as I want to develop more for other animals. You can get this album for £10.99 on iTunes, which is the normal price for an album.

The other product is iCalmdog: Which is a portable device which play a 4 hour clinical-proven songs for your dogs depends on his mood. This product seems very professional and ideal, however, its price range is from 79.95 to 369.95 which not all pet owners can afford. I also checked on one of their CD track and it is mostly chosen classical songs that you can just play for your dogs on the mp3 players or your phones.

I have talked about iCalmdog more in my other blog post:

Pets need music too?

In order to promote my product, I have decided to run a music campaign. I have learned that the best way to promote my product is just to be sincere about it. I know a lot of people with pets will have the same ideas of improving their pets’ activities. Kickstarter campaign for Music for Cats is the most useful example for my app. They have raised more than $240,000, when only expected $20,000. How do they do this? It is to make more awareness, and it has to come from the heart, for the better good. After all, isn’t music about make life easier, for you and everyone you love, including your pets?

On the campaign site, they said “Seeing is believing” as they showed us a video of a cat listening to David’s song. There is no other way more convincing when music is played for an animal and we can see his/her reaction, as they cannot lie. I shall use this method in my campaign as well. In fact, I have filmed my cat listening to an acoustic song I picked in my previous blog post.

Testing my model

I will then later test her on the songs I composed. This is one example of a song I composed a couple years ago. It is a piano solo (with a few mistakes !!), but hopefully I can get more songs out there for testing purpose.

And of course, my customers age range are from 10-90, as long as you own a pet !!! I can imagine my campaign will need at least 500 pounds start up, for all the advertising and app creating. This is one of the example I found on how to get a Music Campaign from Sandbox article “The Year’s Best Music Marketing Campaign”.to

In conclusions, I am quite positive that my product will serve a purpose, to help pets and pet owners around the globe connect and enjoy the best times of their lives.
